Former FIU coach accepts coaching job with Minnesota

Former Florida International University head coach Richard Pitino has accepted the head coaching job with the Minnesota Gophers.

Pitino is the son of Louisville Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino, who led his team to the national championship by beating Michigan on Monday night 82-76.

He coached Florida International for one season in 2012-13. Pitino led FIU to 18 wins in his one year with the program.

Pitino led Florida International to its first winning season since 1999-2000. Florida International had 11 conference wins with Pitino at the helm.

He was an assistant coach from 2009-11 with the Florida Gators.

Pitino was an assistant coach at Duquesne and at Northeastern University.

He spent time with the Louisville Cardinals from 2007-09 and 2011-12.

Pitino graduated from Providence in 2005.
